Subjects
In Ghana, Senior High Schools (SHS) follow the curriculum set by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). Subjects are grouped into Core Subjects (compulsory for all students) and Elective Subjects (based on chosen programmes of study).
Core Subjects (compulsory for all programmes)
English Language
Focuses on developing students’ communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It builds competence in grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, essay writing, summary, and literature appreciation, enabling effective expression in academic and everyday contexts.
Mathematics (Core)
Provides students with a strong foundation in numerical, algebraic, geometric, and statistical concepts. It enhances problem-solving, logical reasoning, and analytical skills applicable in daily life, higher education, and various professional fields.
Combines key principles of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Environmental Science. It equips students with scientific knowledge, practical skills, and an understanding of natural phenomena, technology, and the environment for sustainable living.
Integrated Science
Social Studies
Examines human society, culture, governance, and the environment. It promotes civic responsibility, critical thinking, and knowledge of Ghana’s history, geography, and socio-economic development, preparing students to be informed and responsible citizens.
